{"id":3227,"date":"2017-07-27T09:17:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-27T09:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/urbane-eco.co.uk\/site\/?p=3227"},"modified":"2018-05-04T10:42:44","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T10:42:44","slug":"what-is-wood-fibre-and-how-is-it-made","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbane-eco.co.uk\/site\/what-is-wood-fibre-and-how-is-it-made\/","title":{"rendered":"What is wood fibre and how is it made?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wood fibre insulation was introduced about 20 years ago, after the engineers from the timber producing areas of Europe devised new ways of transforming timber waste into insulation boarding.<\/p>\n<p>The success of wood fibre insulation is all thanks to an attractive and environmentally friendly profile with a number of functions, including rigid insulation for floors and roofs as well as insulation for studs and rafters.<\/p>\n<p>Wood is of course renewable, it locks in carbon during growth and is relatively free from pollution. When we refer to wood fibre being \u2018breathable\u2019 it also relates to the hygroscopic nature of the product. This is the ability of the material to absorb and release moisture from the atmosphere as the humidity rises and falls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro\u2019s and Cons\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u2193<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #808080;\">Wood fibre is u<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">sually imported from another country which adds to its embodied energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2193 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">It&#8217;s treated with paraffin wax which derives from a petrochemical substance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2193\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Rigid boards can be fragile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">\u2191 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Wood fibre contains a high percentage of what would otherwise be waste material.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">\u2191<span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Recyclable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\"><strong>\u2191\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Locks in co2 emissions during tree growth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">\u2191<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Hygroscopic \u2013 meaning it provides humidity control to prevent damp.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">\u2191\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Decrement delay \u2013 meaning it takes longer for heat to pass through.<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\"><strong>\u2191<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Finally, and usually the most attractive, it significantly reduces energy costs to the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although Wood fibre is typically the most expensive material we use for insulation, it undoubtedly has the most benefits.
